DAILY REFLECTION BY REV FR AWOYEMI EMMANUEL, ILORIN DIOCESE, NIGERIA

HOMILY FOR TUESDAY {09/07/2024}, 14TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME B

[HOSEA 8:4-7, 11-13; MATTHEW 9:32-38]

One thing that all of us must be careful of is the express statement Jesus made when it has to do with sin against the Holy Spirit. Matt 12:31 says all manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men, but the blasphemy against the Holy Spirit shall not be forgiven unto me.

The text we have in our readings today gives us instances in which we can fall into the trap of sin against the Holy Spirit. From the first reading, we see the House of Israel not acknowledging the almighty power of God. They didn’t stop there, they were accrediting the things that God did for them to their man-made gods. Handwork, success, and victory were not seen as God’s benevolence upon them. Many a time, we see ourselves in this light too. We often regard our success to be our efforts; with the wealth that we have today, many will not put God first; I am beautiful because I took care of my body and so on. This is the same attitude we see in the gospel passage today, the people after seeing the mighty works of Jesus in the several healings and most especially in the healing of the demoniac, we hear the people saying that Jesus is using the power of Satan.

Dear brothers and sisters, the lesson we must hold tight in our readings today is that we must put God or better still acknowledge God in all we do. Many persons may not want to agree about how they worked tirelessly to achieve their success or victory, but if God does not give you life, will that success be ours? If God did not give us the strength and the grace, would we be able to achieve that goal or success we recorded? The Psalmist tells us that we must trust God because God can do whatever he wants. God must be included in our lives. We must acknowledge Him in every endeavour of our lives because everything good comes from Yahweh.

Pax Vobis
