HOMILY FOR FRIDAY, 14TH JUNE, 2024
TENTH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME
1KING 19:9a. 11-16; GOSPEL: MATT 5:27-32
The conscience of man is where morality is evaluated. By morality I mean the ascertaining of one's behaviour whether right or wrong. Conscience is where God speaks to us most time. God also speaks to us through other means: through human beings, nature etc.
Today in the first reading we see the prophet Elijah running for his life but something very significant happened to him which is how God or where God appeared to him. God wasn’t found in the earthquake, fire or turbulent wind. God’s voice was heard in a still small voice. It is this still small voice that sometimes many of us hear perhaps when we begin to meditate or reflect on our lives or when we are before the Blessed Sacrament. God never ceases to talk to us through that innermost part of us. When we are alone with God, we will surely hear him.
This is the same small voice that Jesus tries to talk to us in the Gospel when He made us better understand the scriptures. It is not until we are seen or not seen sinning externally that we can say we have sinned against God. Sin begins from the innermost part of ourselves. The conscience or the heart is where most time we harness this sinful thought and when we cannot control it, it gains ground and we fall for it.
Dear brothers and sisters, we must do well to train the innermost part of our lives to welcome good thoughts. Our hearts are so dear to us that we must continue to evaluate those thoughts to see if they the pass morality test. When they are bad, we must do well to cut them off before it gets too late. When we do not cut them off, and we entertain them, they make impart in our lives and we begin to see them as normal. This is what we face in our society today. Many see things on the internet space and instead of us to evaluate these things, we accommodate them and begin to entertain them. A typical example is a woman who has friends. These friends will tell her that your husband is equal to you. He has no right to force you to carry out certain duties. And of course, this woman took the advice of her friends and began to exhibit behaviours to her husband. Before we knew it, the man was fed up with the whole situation and decided to leave the house because the wife he married was no longer the wife he had married a few years back. When she finally got to her senses, it was too late the man had already found someone who treated him not just as a boyfriend but as a husband because he had already gotten the woman pregnant.
There are other scenarios we see too. Wearing skimpy dresses, torn clothing, exposing some parts of bodies for the sake of fashion etc. Please before you take any action that will lead you and others to sin, we must evaluate ourselves. And when we do, our conscience will tell us the rightness of the actions to take.
